A group of seven accused members of German far-left organization stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
