In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
