Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals using such medications must be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly starving," described a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural management.
